NEW THIS YEAR! Interior BC ski-orienteering series, featuring the Canadian ski-orienteering championships and a warm-up event in the Kootenays!

Mark your calendar, wax your skis and book your flights and accommodation!

This year there will be 5 ski-orienteering events held in beautiful British-Columbia, 4 of them will count towards the Interior BC ski-orienteering series where you will race for points and will also feature the return of the Canadian ski-orienteering championships. Last year at a meeting in California, it was decided that the US and Canada would alternate for the ski-orienteering national championship, giving the athletes the chance to compete in at least one major event every year. This year, it is Canada's turn to put it on and it will be held in BC.

It will all start with a warm-up event at Black Jack ski club, situated in Rossland BC on Sunday February 10th.

The Interior BC ski-orienteering series will then kick off with a weekend of events on February 23/24 at Sun Peaks resort (Kamloops vicinity) and Larch Hills ski club (Salmon Arm).
The circus will move on the following weekend, March 1/2 to Sovereign Lake (Vernon) and Stake Lake (Kamloops vicinity) where the Canadian Championship will be held.

5 ski-orienteering events, all conveniently situated in BC - don't miss out!
And if you wish to make 2008 a ski-orienteering year, why don't you join me and a few others and link it up with the Sierra Avalanche Orienteering Festival (http://baoc.org/wiki/Schedule/2008/SkiO ) from January 30-February 3 in Truckee California.
If you're not gliding, you're not doing it right. If you're not making mistakes, you're not moving fast enough!

More details to come. Pass to all of your ski-orienteering friends!

Just edit the post and put a space between the "O" and the ")".

I'm a bit puzzled about all these different ski-o "championship" events. We have:
2008 Sierra Avalanche Ski-Orienteering Championships
Lake Tahoe Area (http://baoc.org/wiki/Schedule/2008/SkiO)
BAOC Ski-O Championships (http://baoc.org/wiki/Schedule/2008/Bear_Valley)
and now the Canadian Ski-O Championships. I haven't heard or read anything about the US Ski-O Championships.

Are the first 2 just club championships of some sort? I seem to think that's not the case since I think it's the same club, BAOC. Are all BAOC meets called "championships" just for fun? Does anyone know about US Champs?

There is no US champs in winter 2007-08: it's a biennial event.

Maybe my memory is bad (side effects of my cholesterol medication, nothing more), but I thought the championships occur every year. I thought there was a US ski-o championship event at Garnet Hill in March 2006, but perhaps that was 2005. I think the US Champs last year were part of the Sierra ski-o week. According to this site, http://baoc.org/wiki/Schedule/2006/Ski-O_Champions..., BAOC was considering hosting the 2007 championships. I can't find any current information for 2007.

I'll have to go to my map archive to verify the Garnet Hill date.

I don't mean to be a smart ass, but if you read my original message, it states precisely that there is NO US ski-o champ this year as it was agreed to alternate between the US and Canada. Since there was one last year, there will be none this year.

a ski-O event (and the same day for others a winter adventure race ) , Stars will host in January 26 at Mansfield -one hour N of Toronto. Details to follow within a week on Stars site. Use this event to "prepare " for The Ski_o Champs to be hosted in BC ( get familiar with Canadian snow, language- eh ?, etc..)

Okay, that's fair. That interpretation went through my head at first, but then I thought it was too weird to be true. The US championships used to alternate between the right and left coast, but now to have it in California and British Columbia, both on the west coast, 2 years in a row is unusual.

Marie Cat -- glad to see you're coming thru with this. Will have to skip one of my planned loppets (Rangeley ME) and make it out there. Looking forward to it!

Awesome news Ken!

yeah good point Randall, now that we're alternating countries, not much emphasis was put on also alternating East and West. Canada has not had many ski-orienteering events since the days of the North-American Cups back in early '90's, so to actually have found a club excited about the events and willing to put it on is already something else!

The Okanagan valley is a small version of the Tahoe area in a sense that there are 6 or 7 clubs all with over 30km of groomed trails to ski, so anyone that makes a trip out of it and links up the last 2 weekends could ski at a different place everyday during the week. Not a bad destination for an avid skier ;-)

I think the Garnet Hill event was the 2005 US Ski-O Champs, but it was postponed to early 2006 due to weather considerations.
