I don’t know if it’s the same thing, but I’ve had a bad knee for a good 4 years and the physio said mine is due to an extremely tight hamstring and it band. I find sporttape does the trick for minimising the pain while running, not found much that stops the horrible feeling afterwards though:( an ice pack is always a good shout, and lots of rolling! hope this helps:))
