I wondered if you had done any O this year. I suppose if you have lots of wonderful terrain at home, then why travel? On the other hand, why do all that training if not to go to a national meet and get a scalp off a youngster?

Well, that is the hurdle rate right there--why take the time and energy to travel if the terrain is going to be less wonderful than it is right here? There would have to be some other compelling reasons to make the trip, and competition is so thin in the States these days that won't be one of the reasons.

As for training, I love running in the woods. And I also like the way it feels when you are pushing and running somewhere close to wherever it is the red line lies. In truth, it is much less something called "training" than just what I like to do.

That it leaves me fitter than I would otherwise be is an additional benefit. Never mind that when I am fit, I have a positive image of myself, and the idea of being in poor shape--as the vast majority of adult Americans are--is simply unacceptable to me.

Upcoming compelling reason: Reunion-O at West Point, complete with Old Grad special activities. And Team Trials. Definite scalp possibilities. ;-)

Seriously, I think COL Read is going to talk maps. You should come. It will be awesome.

Well, that's fine, and if I were within a few hours of West Point, I would be there for sure. But from here, looking at it prospectively as a race, for me personally it's not worth it. It's not even close.

Probably I would be most interested in running a Red course. At this year's event, in M35 there was 1 competitor, in M40 there were 2 finishers, in M45 there were 7. Looking at that, if I were going to make the kind of trip required to get to West Point, then I wouldn't even think of going there--I would just keep on going and head for somewhere in Europe instead, where there would be some meaningful competition.

Well, F21 do also run red. And this is a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem that I too am guilty of worsening: if nobody goes because nobody is going to go, that is self-fulfilling.

Maybe you need to go to Europe.

One person to run against in M35, and that's not enough for you? Not meaningful? Sigh...
