I think the name in latin translates to Island of the Dogs or something like that. My former department head used to study island endemics and spent quite a lot of time in the Canaries.

Yes, and I believe that the canaries (finches) are named after the Canary Island, possibly their "origin".

I'll fix the pictures tomorrow. The origin of the name of the islands is unclear (maybe dogs, maybe not), but the birds are named after the islands.
