For the freezing water bottle, a bit of electrolyte solution will change the freezing point. Nuun tablets are easy to carry for when you top up your bottle at aid stations.

Agreed. At the ski marathon, you can also put hot water into your bottle. It might be worth carrying a small thermos in your pack though.

I got some insulated sports flasks. You can borrow one. There are also lots of nice insulated bottles now. Bladders are useless even with electrolyte at those temps.

Thx for the tips. I did start with boiling water. It's also the nozzle - it gets frozen even if the water in the bottle doesn't. I will try a different insulated one this weekend as it's supposed to be quite cold again Sat.

I didn't use a nozzle for the ski marathon. You can add an insulated cover but if it gets cold, you also need a chemical warmer. I'd find a solution without a nozzle.

Hmm - vodka...
I couldn't unscrew the water bottle or belt lid either so even without a nozzle cold days are tricky.
