10MILA 2019 is coming this weekend in the South of Sweden. I hope all of you have already purchased your tickets for live TV at
https://webbtv.10mila.se . English commentary will be done by me together with Cristina. Make sure to tune in!
Also, please send us questions, comments, and predictions, as well as any interview requests you may have. Post them here, send them by email to studio10mila.en@gmail.com, or better yet, tweet us @10milaTVen !
Post here if you know of runners from English-speaking countries who are running. List team/leg, if possible. Obviously, there are a lot of Brits, so I am especially interested in North Americans, Irish, Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans, etc. Extra interested if they are running in the youth relay.
Adrian Vartia, OK Loftan 1 leg 4, US JWOC team member
Nick Simonin is running 1st leg for Bækkelagets.
I'm so excited about this.
Is anyone watching? Ask us questions!
How many meatballs have you consumed so far???
Is Tampyreen Pyrinto's lead looking safe?
The stream says your name is Christina.
Where is Tove? I'm out of the loop.
We just talked about her. Pay attention.
I appreciate the aspirational "I hope they don't get hit by this car" from Boris.
How is the weather there?
We can hear you talk over the scintillating commercial.
Robbie Anderson is running the second leg for GMOK 3. Bet you can’t get him to do an interview.
Yeah I forked up.
We'll get Robbie. :-)
We'll be back with coverage of the men's race at 2:15pm EDT.
Perhaps a burrito-related competition is in order? You could give the compass to whoever ate the most burritos in 2011, say.
Wow, Linne 1 looks to be really strong if David Lingfors runs for Linne 2.
Idea for competition: pick three teams by leg 3, winner is submission with smallest sum of places of those 3.
Question for Boris and Cristina: what fraction of runners in 10mila are Swedish? To Cristina's point, do most runners for top teams compete for their local clubs, or do they form uberteams and sell their services to the highest bidder (e.g. Koovee). Do top orienteers change clubs many times over their careers?
It's also not clear to me how competitive Norwegian and Finnish teams are (or even which teams are from which nations, if they don't have "uu" in their team name). Do many non-Swedish teams have Swedish runners?
Thanks for the question! Do you think the rain will affect the race very much? I suppose visibility might be reduced from headlamps a bit. Will this encourage people to change their tactics?
When will they show the course map?
Where will Linne and Nydalens finish???
Win a Str8 Evo compass: send us your prediction for the first non-Nordic finisher of the Long Night (leg 4). Tiebreaker: leg time for that runner. Get your prediction in before the first runner finishes leg 3!
Alasdair McLeod first non-Nordic finisher on long night for lillomarka 1st team
Do all the control sites have the red strobe or just the radio sites?
Q: If you put together a completely stacked team of the best 10 orienteers in the world, how much faster would they be than the winning team?
Duncan Coombs IL Tyrving for first non nordic long night finisher
@wooders, @benmitchell - don't forget to submit finishing times in case of tie breaker.
Prediction: Kratov, 107 minutes
By the way, since you mentioned Maxim Omelchenko, I wonder if you know any other father-son pairs running in this relay? (Yuri is running leg 9 for Orion's 2nd team.)
I'm too tired to do research into the fastest 4th leg competition...
But do you have an update for us on your meatball count Cristina?
Andreu Blanes, SNO
108:00
^Lizzie asking the important questions.
But Haribo gummies count much higher now.
Remember to submit your leg times as a tiebreaker for the predictions!
Bad start with Tampereen Pyrinto 4:20 down just after Boris profiled how great they were. What top teams will get Boris'd next??
Can’t believe it will be a dead heat between two non-Nordic runners... but if so; 108:53 - Alasdair McLeod (Lillomarka 1).
I think it's if 2 people pick the same runner
Shout out to Anton; sucks about the ankle.
Andrea B guessing: Kratov 106:12
Magnus J guessing: Blanes 104:49
Q: How many North American clubs have fielded Tiomila teams?
I think we know the answer but I'll also eat a gummi in honor of the person who gets the answer right here.
Oleksandr Kratov has to be the pick. 99min.
Kratov 105:45 Go Koovee:)
Nice moon by Emil Granqvist - looks like his battery was too heavy. What's up with the prewarning punches? I see Ravinen 1:33 behind Jarla.
Jarla sneakily winning the 2nd leg by 2 minutes, lol.
Andreu Blanes Reig 105.28
Tyrving IL 1 is looking solid, but Kratov might catch them...
Timon Schweizer, Järla: 107:36
Props to Boris for busting out the Russian in the interview.
Andreu Blanes 1:47:30 (sorry Nixon)
Still, Kratov's gonna have to gain 5 minutes on Järla... I think it's gonna depend on the Leg 4 for Järla, Timon Schweizer, and whether or not he can run consistently.
Oooh OK Ravinen is catching up!
Lol Ravinen grabbing onto a helicopter for a bit there.
It's the middle of the long night! Don't fall asleep yet!
Can you guys recap the non-Scandinavian leaders? Kratov, SNO guy, Spanish dude?
SNO and Halden's runners have no idea how much is riding on their result.
Boris and Cristina have reached the existential phase of the night - "we are literally staring at a lit up piece of polyester right now."
Ask Judith for some Red Bull
I am enjoying how Boris gets more snarky as he gets tired.
I'm still here! You're doing a great job as commentators :)
Damnit, Kratov; you had one job.
So many people did NOT win a compass!
Kratov, just run 2-3 seconds faster....
Kratov running fast - 101:10.
Interesting to see how the front mega pack of almost 20 people got broken up; now there are only about 6 runners very close to each other in the lead.
I still have hope for Koovee...
woooo! I won't make you post it to New Zealand.
it won't work there anyway
My lame attempt at a joke:
Q: What do you get when you combine Batman with Usain Bolt?
A: Oleksandr Kratov
Maybe Tiomila is like the WWE - completely staged. You generate some synthetic GPS tracks, put one illuminated TV control in the woods, and have hired runners in the appropriate shirts run by at particular times.
Cristina spilled the beans by joking that we're definitely not seeing the same illuminated TV control in the dark night.
Maybe you should give the compass to Lucas...
Will there be a Catching Features: Tiomila e-sport?
I am curious what greasy food options are available in the arena at almost 4am. I see there are at least a few spectators awake, surely they are demanding korv?
@ken - the few spectators not sleeping in front of the big screen in the ice rink would not be let down. There are korv, hamburgare, sup och kanelbullar on offer, plus apples if you'd like something healthy.
I'll whisper that the offer in the live-production house is running slightly low on chocolate.
Greetings from the shepard of 26 radios controls...
Boris & Cristina - thanks for the excellent hosting/commentary. Hope you manage to hang in for the next 3-4 hours. We are going to bed. ; )
Looks like the whole Linné team could do with a compass really
How much of the race is left? Trying to decide if I should pay up :)
I'm back after a snooze during legs 6-9! Did anything make you laugh in the end?
we don't laugh, it was a trick question.
So Boris is saying that if you're in a race against Matthias Kyburz, make a move on him earlier in the woods, because otherwise he'll burn you at the end.
Albin makes a move! But is it enough?
These tricky controls in the green patches are just a boatload of fun. /s
Goteborg's strategy was to get all the other teams to forget how to orienteer. A bold move.
Bakmann: "Our strategy is to run faster than everyone else."
Surely Bejmer's stache costs him like 10s over 14 km.
Great commentary!! Boris and Cristina were fantastic!
Thanks for having me Christina and Boris!
Having followed 10mila on site I'm reading this on the way home in a minibus (not driving). Had a brief sighting of Cristina about to get busy with the Emily interview so no words exchanged.
Have to watch some of the English coverage when it's available on the web after coming home.
Thanks for following us during the night! Doing the web commentary for Tiomila is always a blast, but it's made way better by audience participation. Seems like the compass giveaway was a hit. Any more feedback for us? Positive or negative, feel free to post here or dm.
Also, a nice recap of tiomila from On the Red Line, from the British perspective:

You guys did a great job! I really enjoyed all the commentary and interviews I was awake for.
