Maybe stick to snake-free flower boxes and containers to still get some gardening in? :-)
Although, I guess they could curl up and hide in the containers...

Just make a noise like a mongoose before you go out.
I *was* making noise. And rustling the bushes in each new area I was working in, which is why I was so surprised the gartersnake was still there. I recognized that it wasn't a venomous snake, so I rustled the plants between me and him, and he took off but he came to an overhang, which I guess he didn't want to go over. So, he turned back to me and coiled up! And then I was done.
