That sounds super cute! How old are the kiddos competing?

Totally! =) For the 'Cat 3' = one lap only it was ages 1-3 and all those kids were on balance bikes (and parental help allowed). Cat 2 is how many mini-loops you can do in 5 min and that had kids 3-8, some on balance bikes, some pedal bikes, no parents.

What category is the adult balance bike competition, and are you allowed to use your balance bike as a projectile?

No and they are pretty permissive of what sort of bike you ride at this race, there were cross bikes and fat-tire bikes in addition to mountain bikes in the race, but didn't see any adult balance bikes.

That said, I totally scooted myself over the tops of some steep rollers balance-bike style! Helped that I was using flat pedals.

Totally =) def. a good workout. And I won Women's Cat 3! Improvement over last year when I was 6/13 the first time I tried short track. (Racing cross in the fall totally helped.)
