Wondering if anyone else has toyed with the symbols.xml file in PurplePen, to create new customized graphical icons.
Here below is somewhat of a symbolic representation of a street lamp (light).
Many thanks to Bob Boltz of the Northeast Ohio Orienteering Club (NEOOC) for the hint on how to do this.
I googled and clicked "images" for graphical examples of "beer icon", which seemed superior to images of "beer emoji".
I'm partial to tall-neck bottles over mugs, but you've got such limited space. One was a Facebook thumbs-up holding a tall neck. There are many very bold, simple mug examples.
{edited} I just realized there are already chalk symbols for most (all?) of the hashing clues.
A lamp is typically at another feature (e.g road junction, path bend) in our neck of the woods though we still tend to use 'light pole' as a (English) description for our street events regardless.
That is too cool! We find old cars irresistible out here, time to break some standards and avoid a text line.

... and here is a photo of the cannon and its surrounding area
The name of the park map is "Guns and Roses" - I might add the special symbol into the course descriptions for these two examples:

@sherpes can you elaborate on the instructions a bit here? Perhaps post an example of your symbols.xml file?
Stumbling around trying to figure this out, as I know nothing about how to do this, I tried just copying an existing symbol and editing it, but I just got the same symbol due to the id #, which seems to be required from the notes at the top. The only thing I was able to edit was the name.
@MIclimber, I've only "dabbled' with this a bit but found if you duplicate items (same ID, modified text) you will get the extra items with the different text but the graphics will be taken only from the first one in the XML file found - which matches what you saw. however, despite the ID being a IOF ID, as there is no actual external links for the items, you can just pick ID's not currently used for the duplicates and they will work. Obviously the procedure to actually change the graphics is tricky and takes some trial and error,.
thanks I will play around with some more
Played around with... It is quite tedious without gui editor, but theoretically any icon is possible with enough practice and time. Excited to deploy these for ARs.

What's the AR description for 'misplaced control'?
I’m bridging worlds at our events with Lidar maps and gps placed controls, slowly but surely bringing niched folks together
I now have custom symbols for bike, trek, paddle, fence/hay bale, Easter egg, and an old car. A kind email request and I can share my file. Interesting symbol suggestions considered.
