I think part of what gives SF its reputation for steepness is that the street grid almost completely ignores the topography, whereas in many other hilly cities the streets (sort of) follow the contours so you don't really see how steep it is.

It's actually really steep in lots of places. How many CBDs have tunnels through hills? But it's surprising how the contours aren't particularly obvious on the map.
