From my readings it appears that she wasn't a brand-new bride but had in fact already been married, borne 3 children and divorced an unfaithful husband. Possibly of equal interest to a geologist would be the fact that they stayed at an abandoned mining camp - there were cinnabar (mercury) mines in this area.

Sometime track down a book which I think is called Good Wives - it is the stories of the wives of Robert Louis Stevenson, Dr Livingstone Charles Darwin (I think) and Captain Cook (I think)

Love the drive-thru tree, neat spot. And so interesting to read about some of the interesting people who have lived in the middle of such beauty. John Muir is another fun one to read / think about. I may have to check out Good Wives as inspiration for next year’s California O-Fest wanderings...
