I set off on a gentle run yesterday starting gently on a flat path. Pulse 100 after 35 seconds and stable at 134 after about 1 minute. People's heart rates vary a lot anyway, but for me trying to stay under 100 sounds like the walk/brisk walk boundary.

Cheers, its amazing how I have no idea about where these middling points are. I never understood why resting pulse varies so much, but maximum is rather accurately determined by 220-age.

This is somewhere the exercise bike might be useful as it is much easier to regulate the effort involved all the way up and down the scale.
Also the variation between people can be considerable, I remember racing Stevie Nic (probably 3 decades ago when we were both maniacally fit). We were both eyeballs out but his HR was at least 25 less than mine.
Kitch could tell you lots more I'd bet.

Lots of reasons for increased HR due to your condition.
- Cardiac function compromised by the infarctions you mentioned when you first discovered what was going on.
- Compromised respiratory capacity due to pulmonary clots
- Increased lactate production from ischaemic muscles - circulation blocked by clots ( those pains in your muscles)

And anyway, like Dave says, under normal circumstances 100bpm is probably brisk walk, maybe light jog. Factor in the points above and its likely down to walking pace.

Apprehension re the test might raise HR before you even started :-)
I only get HR data from a watch (and some days it's garbage) but gentle jogging is always 120+

The maximum is determined by the conduction path between the top and bottom of the heart. This fires and then there is a delay while it resets itself before it can fire again. This acts as a sort of safety mechanism to stop chaotic electrical signals in the atria being transferred into the ventricles. The length of time it takes for the system to reset itself gets longer as you age and your heart becomes increasingly electrically unstable.

Does that make me the first M65 to run WOC? (I believe that the "220-age" figure has a standard deviation of about 13, so 95% of people will be within about 25 of it - I'm one of the 5%).

@ndobbs@blair Very interesting that you two athletic outliers are at the opposite ends of the range.
More depressing is that I've been told this before and forgot :(. The thing that confused me is why minimum heart rate is trainable, but maximum heart rate isn't. And a good way to improve minimum heart rate is by training at (or near) maximum!

nah, once your minimum HR gets to zero you just have to keep running and not go there. You'll be 220 years old before the max gets to zero.
