ebuckley: by They Might Be Giants seems a much better song for an applied mathematician. Why do triangles hate particles so much anyway? Seems just the sort of thing a gun slingin' texas mathman might want to ponder.

Swampfox: We could both send him our playlist suggestions, as a completely out of the blue Christmas gift. He would be so blown away he might tumble off into Oklahoma, and he would sing "The Lucky One" over and over again, all day long.

tomwbil: That's a very astute distinction, ebuckley, because I am certainly not by any means a number theorist.

You guys should know though that "we" don't like civilians joking about math. The lay folk mess it up, misuse it or use it for evil far too often and our patience ran out a couple of centuries ago. Just ask Gale's step dad, Ivar. He'll set you straight.

disorienteer: It's true. Tom gets very annoyed watching "Numbers," for example. He'll say, "Yeahhhh, that's a real equation, but you can't use it that way!" It's so entertaining.

BTW, I've updated Tom's new playlist -- still need a few more!

Boojums: Maybe we should stop trying to be so intellectual and realize that maybe Tom just needs something to balance out the girlie stuff. I recommend one that is often on my ipod, Bodies.

ebuckley: Hey! I'm no civilian. As Doctor Science would say: "I have a Master's Degree!"

Swampfox: I have a sneaking suspicion you are talking about Gail, not Gale, right? If so, I have a vivid memory of the man who would be Ivar working a soil absorbtion problem on a yellow legal pad. Even though I was a mere civilian, I knew at the time I was witnessing real math.

jjcote: Ratlaf once explained to me why Triangle Man hates Particle Man, and at first I was skeptical, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that he was probably right. But I'm too polite to go into the details in this forum, even though it doesn't involve politics.
