People can make donations to the senior team here...https://orienteering.asn.au/index.php/donations/
I know it has been put on facebook this year, maybe we should be doing what GB does and publicising it more. I think it's a little unfair to OA to say that we get no funding, woc costs a hell of a lot more than we pay, as does jwoc.
Cheers Ais and Jim!
Motivate and Brodie - Yeah wasn’t directed at OA but instead at those who make people feel silly for fundraising... Aust Sports commission as the British ones have cut a lot of funding for lower profile sports... I’m sure OA would love to give more if they could... either way the reality is that the little we do get is still not enough to pay your way and justify the time off to all of the World Cups and WOC throughout the year... if it was we would be sending full teams. Other nations don’t have that issue... then we get constantly told we don’t perform as well as them... point I’m trying to make is that people should be encouraging, the juniors especially, to do things to help pay their own way instead of creating negative stigma on forums/social that discourages it and the training choices that individuals make. I recently saw the Maynards do a call for sponsorship on fb for Tri and thought this was brilliant! You see badges on all of the top nations shirts... and its not in-often that Ive heard it said that ‘Australians don’t deserve them.’ The only people who don’t deserve sponsorship or funding are the people who aren’t willing to seek it out to get to where they want to be in the sport!
I would say the main reason we can't send full teams is that the world cups are at times of the year that people aren't in Europe. Long way to travel for those that live in Aus just for a WC.
I agree we should be encouraging our athletes to get sponsorship and I definitely know this is encouraged - maybe just an area we need to educate people more about.
My experience is also that states are much more willing to support fundraising by their own people than they are to provide money to OA to support national teams. (Apart from Sport Australia grant funding which we can't spend on high performance, OA has almost no income of its own - it all comes via the states in some form or other).
