That was a minisprint at the old CCC and POW camp where we dropped our packs and ran around (in the dark) looking for 15 control punches, no flags, just reflectors. Fun change of pace!
Our losses were just after mile 2 where we went too high on the trail (25 min), and at 8 where the control was on a spur which didn't exist and rather was in a flat section away from the mapped location. Found it on our way out after wasting 45 min and bagging the search.
the control was on a spur which didn't exist and rather was in a flat section away from the mapped location
you're saying that the circle was drawn on the spur, but the flag was placed away from the spur? what did the hint (english language sentence) say?
The clue was spur. The circle was on a mapped spur. There was just no spur on the ground. It was a broad, flat area on a gradual hillside, all covered with brushy trees and blueberry/laurel. There was a broad spur but it was further down the hillside. That was control certainly frustrating, but generally the controls were fair and challenging, with less precision than a rogaine but better than many adventure races.
