I’ve survived for about three years total since moving here on Zipcar and it’s great but the thing I miss is the lack of spontaneity at the weekend. You have to book in advance to get a car at the weekend (can be more than a week for a summer weekend) and so you have to plan things out a little carefully.
During the week you can usually get one right away so it’s great for grocery shopping etc.
It has let me down in a big way twice with random cancellations at the last minute and cars not being there when I arrived. Both occasions were of course time sensitive, on a weekend when they are no free cars close by, and it was stressful.
In general the cars here seem worse maintained than the ones in New Haven - they probably get used much more. I’ve had one car here that didn’t feel safe when I got in and I reported it and they switched me.
If you have any specific Qs happy to answer them!
We rent for long weekend trips based on the cost of maintenance once you have a car with lots of miles on it. Lessons learned from gap year. Jon can probably share the math behind his reasoning if you’re curious.
