you don't want to go through Carrington ?

We went through Carrington and on to Bonnyrigg. Jane doesn't like the A7 or the main road climb out of Lasswade. I didn't fancy the slog back to Roslin.

What do you think is the best route back from Carrington?

I usually come west out of Carrington on the minor road, then left turn past Broachrigg Farm and straight over the A6094 past Gourlaw, right turn to drop into Roslin Glen. But yes, that climb out of Roslin Glen back up to Roslin takes no prisoners.
I guess I'm not clear where you're trying to get to going through EdgeLaw

We went out along your route through Gourlaw. No prisoners in the other direction either!
There's a really nice road up to Edgelaw, but to dead-ends. Saturday we went straight on along rough tracks for a couple of miles. Not best. Sunday we'd hoped the track around the Edgelaw reservoir would be cyclable. With a MTB it would be fine, but it isn't really doable on road bikes.
We were also looking for Polton Bank/Road - but that also looks brutal!

Yes, the North Esk is a bit of a barrier.
The gentlest crossings are the 701 Penicuik and A768 Lasswade and the A7. Quieter roads are all steep

Not a route that I have used but perhaps from Carrington go north through to Lothianbridge on minor road to the A7 for 300m, then loop round the B6392 through Eskbank to Dobbies ?
