So did this get your attention?

BAOC plans to hold a two-day A-meet in the Lake Tahoe area in June, with me as the tentative event director. We are probably not going to have a Sprint/Short/Classic trifecta, but we do plan to set short courses at Fallen Leaf Lake on Saturday, and then classic courses at Spooner Lake on Sunday. The course setters will be Dan SH and Thorsten Graeve.

Many of you may not remember this, but there is one section of very nice, well-mapped terrain on the FLL map, in the northwest corner. As Jeff mentioned, Dan set courses on just that part of the map in 2004. Click here to see the red course. I'm assuming that the short courses this June will be set on this same part of the map, which is fun, fast, and runnable. I finished the 7.1 km course in question in 65 minutes with approximately 5 minutes worth of errors, which were all my fault, not the fault of the map.

The lousy parts of the map are the eastern part used on the infamous Day 1 of the US Champs (not on the 2004 map at all), and the southwestern part. You can see some of the southwestern part on the 2004 map. The map quality itself is not bad there, but the terrain is annoyingly steep and brushy.

But trust me, the part of the FLL map we will be using in June will provide high quality orienteering. Those of you who swore never to return to FLL after the US Champs will be missing out if you stay home.

Sorry to say, but I recall that somewhere southeast of 14, in the heat of competition against Mike Eglinski, who was in sight, with the US Championship hanging in the balance by a couple minutes between the two of us, I came to a screeching halt, trying to figure out if the 2 meter boulder I was next to was on the map. (It wasn't.) It was nicer woods and fun running though; I did enjoy that part of the terrain.
