barb: Thinking of going to the A meet in Tucson?
I found a place that is on the north side of Tucson near hiking trails that can be rented Saturday 16th Feb to Saturday 23rd Feb. It's in a home, and is huge with an open floor plan that sleeps 6 people. I'm thinking that I might rent the smaller space next to it; cost of the up-to-6-person space would be around $900 for the week.

So let me know (soon) (actually right away) if you're interested. My plan is to go out there on the 16th and hike/train for a week before the meet.

The house has a pool, hot tub, grill, kitchen. No washing machine.

"The Maestro told me there is nothing available to rent in Tuscon, so barb's posting was quite surprising."

There is a very major golf tournament in Tucson the same weekend as the meet so it is not surprising that accomodations are getting a bit tight. I have a hold on a room at a Holiday Inn Express near the Tucson airport Feb 19 to 25. It looks as if I won't be able to use it and I was going to cancel but I would be willing to 'add' a name to the reservation so someone else could use the room and pay the bill. ( I then would still get the benefit of the Priority Club points) Anyone intersted?

Boojums: Barb's house sounds like a pretty sweet setup - if I didn't live here I'd take her up on it!

But, for those looking for just the weekend, there are still rooms available at the meet hotel, the Quality Inn Airport, for Feb 22-24. Double rooms for $99/night. Call 520-294-2500 and ask to have one of the group booked rooms for the Tucson Orienteering Club/Cristina Luis.

bl: I am interested in this meet but I've 4 days at most. Best I've seen for RT (from convenient Manchester) is $411, involving some 8.3 hrs travel time ea way assuming no problems. Anyone see something better from NH/Boston area?

Kseniya: I'm looking for some people to share accomodations and especially car rental. I'm thinking of flying in Thursday night, arriving at Tuscon airport at 11pm. I would fly back Sunday night.
Please feel free to contact me with any ideas.

Boojums: If you're planning on renting a car anyway, look into flying into Phoenix, which is often much cheaper and offers more direct flight options. Phoenix is a (quick) ~90 miles from downtown Tucson, where the meet hotel is. Going directly to the meet site to camp would make it ~160 miles and ~2.5 hours of driving. But, even without a car you can get to Tucson via the Arizona Shuttle (http://www.arizonashuttle.com/ ), R/T $52 if you book in advance.

The one-way prices to Phoenix from Manchester on Southwest are $132 (pre-tax) for Thursday (anytime) with some $132 options still left for Friday arrival. You can get $134 for the return trip if you go back Monday. That puts the total roundtrip price at $308.

For people closer to NY, the JetBlue options are still quite reasonable. Direct+non-stop flights, JFK to Tucson - return is a red-eye.

The end of February is still "high season" down here. If you're going to make the trip out it's worth it to take a few extra days for a mini-vacation. It would be hard to be disappointed.

mikeminium: Southwest also has good prices into Tucson. I got $99-129 flying in/out on Wednesdays (change in Las Vegas). Prices were $20-50 higher each way flying on other days of the week.

jjcote: Flying out of Manchester on Thursday, returning Monday, $319 including all fees on Southwest.

Charlie: I have a room reserved at the Quality Inn the nights of 2/22 - 2/24, and now have scored alternative housing. Does anybody want this reservation? Else I will let it go.
