Here's my beef with the nomenclature. Calling them the COGGS trails infers priority of bike use and/or trail ownership by a particular group, if only subconsciously. This messaging reinforces the notion that the trails are their trails, made for bikes but available to the rest of us. When in fact they are (or should be) our trails (collective our, not Hartley Nature Center's) made for all of us: birders, dog walkers, aging runners, etc.
Disclaimer: I'm not dismissing the incredible amount of work undertaken by COGGS to improve and maintain the trails in Hartley and elsewhere.
How about SHT?
Maybe I'll keep track of my training with descriptors like:
3 miles on rolling trails at Hartley
4 miles on rocks and roots at Hartley
I’d just call it bare earth.
