That vulture shot is amazing. How close were you? The limited depth of field suggests that you couldn't have been too far. Or maybe that's an illusion created by the feathers.

Maybe 10-15 yards? It was up on a post in the parking lot, checking me out while I was checking it out. Several vultures around and not very skittish.

Those vultures are more predatory than many realize. Perhaps they were eyeing you and thinking "dinner".

If they are smart, and I don't know if they are considered to be or not, then they wouldn't have been thinking dinner. Perhaps lunch, more likely brunch or second breakfast, as it was about 9 am. Assuming they practice the "see it, eat it" diet, why wait?
