That seems, um, not a great recipe if everyone is converging there from different directions for the same purpose. Are they at least staggering the assigned days/times so it isn't a big crowd?

I picked Nathan up at Clarkson last Friday and we emptied out his room then. At that point nobody (but me I guess) was looking that far ahead. They had only announced end-of-day Thursday that they would go online after this week's break and were saying that would be for a few weeks and then they'd be back on campus. I didn't see that in the math and said (lied) that I'd be happy to drive all his stuff back up there if that really happened.

It still amazes me that even highly educated people can't comprehend the real meaning of an exponential growth curve.

ok, now I get it. They're clearing the dorm out asap so it can be pressed into service by the medical system if needed. An excellent idea.

Yes, Luke had to "reserve" Thursday, so they had some sort of quota each day all this week. I think it worked because the campus already seemed deserted with 20 hours still to leave.

nice. glad to hear it was appropriately managed.

Clarkson just told their students that classes would remain online for the remainder of the semester. And that you can't come get your stuff from the dorm anytime soon, we'll get back to you about that later, sorry. And then the next day their county had enough test results to demonstrate local community spread had begun.

Makes it harder to press their dorms into hospital service but obviously not a good idea for everyone to travel up there to clean out now. Plus it sounds like the SUNY dorms would be targeted first anyhow.

After a couple of weeks empty, any virus remaining in the empty dorms should now be dead. No idea how Clarkson dorms are laid-out, but I would think clean-outs could be staggered by 1.5-2 hours on each floor; perhaps also by wing.

Anyway, smart thinking to move Nathan out at the first opportunity.

It was, but of course with the way this thing builds, every time you look ahead and anticipate where we'll be a week or two in the future and act accordingly, it looks like overreacting to the vast majority who aren't looking at the math.

The problem with trying to empty dorms out now, anywhere, is that there are multiple floors that you have to use either a stairwell or maybe in some cases an elevator to get to. And those will be higher traffic areas even if you stagger within each floor.

The bigger issue though is that driving several hours to clean out a dorm room just isn't essential travel. The county there is now experiencing spread and is unprepared to do sufficient testing. It wouldn't be reasonable to expect them to staff the campus just to coordinate retrieval of stuff.

Personally I'm still wrestling with the question of whether it would be reasonable for us to drive 1.5 hours to do the social distancing ROC courses. So far I've been too busy, plus I have an achilles that's being aggravated by running so the math isn't yet adding up on that. I've thought occasionally about trying to set up streamer courses at Highland Forest or Pratts Falls but still too busy with work and family priorities. Plus my printer died.
