So what were the woods like? LiDAR was supposedly flown in 2017 but VA has been taking its time gestating the data.

Really nice. Reminiscent of Oak Mountain in Alabama, I thought. Pretty steep though.

This should be within 1.5 hrs from you. The map is not so good, but the area is spectacular. Route 8 N is going thru real Zombie-land

Pretty steep sounds like Oak Mountain in a second way, unless OM rates "radically steep" or some other similarly more intense language. Cool. Hopefully BROC sticks around for the long term and takes advantage someday.

That map is Pandapas Pond, right outside of Blacksburg, VA. I ran on B&W USGS maps colored in with colored pencils when I was at Tech. It is steep and those green areas are pretty much all mountain laurel.

I made a new map with better contours. Unfortunately the new data only covers the area northwest of the pond.
