I think a certainty - what is the average age that the cross over from father to son in running times happens?
I remember Karl K overtaking Willy K around the Kings Park lap
Fortunately I don't think my dad went of a run in his life!
I think I was about 14 when I overtook Phil but I was a bit faster then than I am now.
I remember not being able to keep up with my Dad when I was 9 and he used to jog to a nearby oval and do a few sprints (rugby memories!). I don’t recall Dad running again after that.
I don't know when I got faster than my Dad. Wasn't until my 20's at least. Remember him running about 34mins around the KP long loop with Peter Hill and Tony Whittaker when my best was 36 when I was 20. Remember running that 36 mins and thinking I'll never run that loop faster than that.
I think Bruce
might have reached the tipping point
Went to the Sydney City to Surf with my father and one of his mates when I was 13; before we started they advised me not to try to hang onto them but run my own race. I took their advice and sailed past them with about 2km to go.
Remembering how Susanne & I used to play our parents off against each other when it came to family relays time and handicap calculations - they had to train up to make it into the Casanova team!
I'm sure Liam would beat me at intervals but I can still beat him over 5k. The same probably applies to Bruce and Mason.
My first win over my dad was over 10k at the Belmont fun run in 1986, 39:53 vs 40:13. I think my 10k PB at the start of 1986 was 49:25 and I didn't improve it again until 1990.
