When I lived in Concord Heights (1979-1983) and wanted a longer run, I'd run up 106 to Loudon, Oak Hill Rd. to East Concord, and back home on Portsmouth Street. Ten-ish miles if I remember? Pretty pleasant route except there was a really nasty tempered German shepherd halfway along Oak Hill, I took to arming myself with a hefty stick as a cudgel when I approached that area. Then one day I learned why the dog was bad tempered: the owner came out as I was running by and beat it with a chain. Amazing how my view of that dog went from hatred to pity (but still afraid).
And the running club in Concord in those days, which I was quite active in (but never had any luck at luring anyone into orienteering) was called Turtletown A.C. (we never fancied ourselves as being a BAA type competitive club).
I recall an abused dog on the end of a dead end Lane in Concord, MA around 1980.
The "serve 'em right" approach would be to steal the dog and give it a good life.
