Geoman:
is there a trail that takes you there or is it necessary to partially take the road? Am sure the flowers are at their peak.

The view from Bon Tempe sounds breathtaking! Must be a nice experience to hike those unforested East Bay hills, instead of the thickly wooded Coastal Range along Skyline Blvd in Los Gatos.

By comparison, you enjoyed sun, dramatic views across the Bay, fields of wildflowers at their peak, and easily-traversed open terrain. And idea why there is such a contrast between those two ranges?

@Geoman: We parked in downtown Fairfax, by the Gestalt Haus (on Bolinas, very near Broadway) and walked 0.9 miles through residential streets to Deer Park School. From there, it was all trails. I'll get around to describing my route today or tomorrow.

@Chitown: Bon Tempe is in Marin, in the Coastal Range. Terrain is very similar to the hills around my old house on Skyline, though there are more open areas, and those were covered with wildflowers. As far as why the East Bay hills are different, pretty sure the answer is rain. Rain almost always sweeps the Bay Area from W to E, and each mountain range causes a good deal of the rain to be dumped. Each range to the E is drier (and, therefore, less wooded) than the range to its west.
