I was on the fence about that one, as it looks to be pretty skinny for a greater. But the bill length and lower banding tipped the scales.
I noticed my first black fly of the season about a week ago, and today was the first day I encountered significant numbers of them, so I presume it’s no coincidence that this is when the warblers start showing up.
We've been inundated with black flies for the past week at our place, which is remarkable mainly because there have been few to none in all the years (over 20) we've been here. Today we dug out the headnets that we bought several years ago for a spring canoe trip in Canada and that hadn't been used since. At least we don't yet need to wear headnets and face masks at the same time.
