Cristina: Is there a treadmill ramp in progress?

#  Posted 2008-01-16 04:07:14
PG: I hope! I'm afraid I'm overdoing it as it is.

PBricker: The most important thing, Peter, if you want to stay injury free, is to adhere religiously to the Ten Percent Rule.

chitownclark: ...Follow the 10PR... If you're running 10 miles a week now... run 11 miles next week. And 12 the week after that. And 13 the week after that. This may look like agonizingly slow progress, but in just 8 to 10 weeks, you could be running 20 miles a week....

All very well and good. But what's the plan if you're starting out at 0 miles/week?

Charlie: Then it is safe to increase by 20% a week.

Swampfox: A recommendation from Charlie doesn't carry quite the weight of something from a diety (unless it's an actuarial issue, in which case it's a tie) but it's very close, and it should be noted he does live on top of a hill, and has handled bears with his bare hands.

PG: Notice how rigorously Phil and Charlie keep to the 10% rule. And I am supposed to take their advice?

#  Posted 2008-01-17 00:24:28
Swampfox: Well, since they keep to it rigorously, it's probably safe. It would be different if they were, you know, nonchalant about it.

PG: Good point. And if I look back at my own weekly history, and you have to look very carefully, because if you have a week of no training, that week just sort of disappears, doesn't show up on the chart at all -- hey, there's an idea for something for Ken to work on, though I doubt it is a high priority -- ten it seems I have a lot of zero weeks. And every time, I've bust the 10% or 20% or whatever % rule and started training. So there!

And every time, of course, I have ended up hurt at some point. Hmmm. Maybe I should just do a Boris and stop training and get fat.

bubo: stop training and get fat

Just make sure the G also follows the 10PR and everything will be fine... How about a G ramp?

(Hmm, on the other hand - for some purely mathematical reasons out of my grasp maybe the 10PR rule doesn't apply to the G - could someone please explain that to a layman?)

Charlie: It is a good plan never to have your weight increase by more than 10% a week.

jjcote: Although everybody did that early on, I think.
