| fthfl stwrd rudy: | ah, i was wondering if anybody i knew was doing that! good workout,eh. |

| MDeVoll: | Great workout. I started a team for Master the Met, but I'm the only one on it so far. If you want to join, look for team "Because They're There." Seemed a name that just about summed up why I'm doing it, and it was also a nod to Sir Edmund, may he rest in peace. |

| fthfl stwrd rudy: | I'll look into it...wasn't sure if it was going to work into my schedule. |

| MDeVoll: | OK. If you want in on the fun, just let me know. |

| fthfl stwrd rudy: | Thx! yes, sounds like fun and there is a good cause . but, if its the day after a 'marathon' (or whatever) obviously it wont work. will check. also, i dont have easy access to Big Stairs, though i suppose hills would do. |

| MDeVoll: | Sounds good. One caveat--for each member on the team, we need to raise $100 in sponsorships. Do you think you'd be able to bring in another $100 from friends and family?
Ironic about the hill work--I'm on a training schedule to get ready for the Flying Pig. It's a pretty modest schedule, but it started with getting my long run up to 80 minutes and total weekly runs up to 160 minutes. (I gave up on trying to figure out miles, so I just run by time and go as far as I can in that time.) Now I'm supposed to be working on "hill work," but I thought stairs would be a fun and different way to do this! So, in short, I think hills would be great training. |

| fthfl stwrd rudy: | no problem with the fundraising - people will be glad to try to shut me up by buying me off. I noticed on the website that it said teams can run together...so i've sent in an e-mail asking for a clarification. Doesnt seem to make much sense to run together for a sprint like this. On the other hand, maybe this is not the venue for my competitive mindset.
Oh, a variant of your team name could be 'Because its....where???' Maybe use that for your adventure race team:) |
| # Posted 2008-01-20 05:59:36 | |
| MDeVoll: | I don't know how we'd run together. Last I heard, the let people go every 15 seconds. Maybe team members go consecutively.
As far as competition goes, some will walk up leisurely, but I myself find it hard it leave my competitive mindset at home for any race. Not that I care much about who wins (almost always isn't me), but it's too much fun seeing how far I can push myself. My wife still doesn't let me live down my first orienteering race. It was in Alabama a few years ago. My orienteering book insisted that all competitors do their first race on a white course, so I did, along with about 20 cub scouts. I left them in the dust! Now everytime I come home from a race my wife asks me how many cub scouts I beat. I answer, All of them. |

| fthfl stwrd rudy: | Ha ha. Good that your wife has a sense of humor.
Got an e-mail from the race director. For what its worth, she says individuals will go first, and then teams will start. Which means if you are a team, you might get stuck behind a few 12 person teams walking up the steps at a leisurely pace. maybe a little claustrophobic in a 8' x 20' stairwell if you were trying to race, or even just get a good workout. I do like the idea of raising money for the American Lung Assoc. Maybe we should do it as individuals? We could still get a group together for a training session, meet up before the run, or whatever. |

| MDeVoll: | Sounds like a plan to race as individuals, but meet up. Let's keep in touch. Maybe we can get access to the Met and see what it's like to go up the stairway at least once before the meet. What do you think? |

| Yukon King: | I'll pledge you each $20 if you do it.... do I get a tax receipt, or is the satisfaction of knowing yer both sweating like maniacs a sufficiently concrete benefit that the tax write-off evaporates? (I have US income I can deduct it against even here in Canada) |

| # Posted 2008-01-24 08:03:02 | |
| MDeVoll: | Sweet. Thanks Yukon King!
Let me know if you can get us in the Met. I'm training once a week at my mother-in-law's condo (625 S. Skinker, one of the high rises across from FP). Four times to the top is one time up the Met. We could try to meet there once or twice. Let me know what your weekends look like in the next few weeks. |

| fthfl stwrd rudy: | Way to GO, YK!!! I'm already taking this much more seriously because of you. I will think of you as I climb, thats for sure.
MDV, january weekends w/ the temps above 40 are generally not stair climb weekends, but sounds like a plan. we'll work something out. |
