MTBjen: Good luck with that - are you taking up open water swimming, cricket or perhaps motocross?

Tooms: Only one of those is a sport! Maybe I will try some open water swimming - as long as there are no stingers and that water is lukewarm...

Boltboi: I can help with the luke warm water but cant help with the stingers!!

MTBjen: oh but i've read that that does help with stingers, in my grandma's almanac of pseudomedical fairytales

Tooms: I remember in Mombasa when I was 6 being stung badly by a bluebottle jellyfish that wrapped all round my arm and one side of my torso and there was an old african local man who came up to help and he wanted to urinate on me. My Mum was aghast, being a proper English mum, but I think in the end he just spat on me lots. Maybe he just didn't like me?

Not a lot different to the slavish use of vinegar that was promoted through all the surf clubs back in the late 80s here. It was changed to "apply ice and Sting-goes" by mid-90s.

MTBjen: There's nothing about spitting in grandma's almanac, just pages and pages about keeping your kidneys well covered. And i'm pretty sure saliva is alkaline? Unless (according to my quick and scientific google search) he had cancer, in which case he needs to drink his milk through a straw and have more cesium salts in his diet to stop his teeth dissolving. And he probably ought to meditate on a crystal.

fletch: My year 9 science text tels me that saliva is acidic...
and my senior first aid course told me that warm water was now best for stingers, jellyfish etc (but I'm sure that will change again soon)

MTBjen: Well if you're going to get technical, it can be either. On average it is only just acidic (around 6.8) but it is designed to buffer acids and therefore acts like a base. And becomes alkaline if you eat acidic food. I haven't ever done a first aid course so i'm not sure, but at work we use very hot water. I think it denatures the protein in the toxin, and heat penetrates intact skin better than urine does...

Uncle JiM: Quoting from my 1st aid book

"Pour vinegar over wound for all Box-type jellyfish stings"

But it does go on to say "If a severe sting occurs in a tropical area where it is likely that box-type jellyfish exist, vinegar should be applied to the wound. However, vinegar is not applied to all such envenomations as it can cause furher stinging in some species"
