Indeed - it's just that I don't want to spend 10 minutes explaining that to a cop (especially as the first stage indicated that at least some police were unfamiliar with the laws they were enforcing).

How do you think tte cops are defining the 5k, by road or as tte crow flies. I think we've all been assuming the latter but i could just see someone stopping you and putting your address into google maps.

Legally it would have to be straight line unless the law stated otherwise (which it doesn't - I've checked).

5km via GoogleMaps as a bike route wouldn't get me very far because it insists I take the wiggly bike path along the river no matter where I'm going.
