Yeah was very careful! I figured the vibrations from MTB where more on me and the bike and that the camera in the camera cube in the backpack was somewhat protected

My favourite 4 shots of the day obvious edited.

It is amazing but I’m so rookie I need to spend a lot of time thinking about the settings. I really don’t change much other than exposure once I start and looking at some of the raws that was wrong!

Also turned out I had a lot of sub optimal settings running so have changed that. Next time might go jpeg only for space.

Need to also put the grid on for composition

it is especially difficult to get good exposure when it is sunny like that with lots of pools of shadow. It is possible to edit in post by painting exposure in shadowed parts but it is a frustrating task!

You find majority of the professional MTB shoots are done on cloudy days when the light is better diffused and you can get a better exposure.

Nice shots though! Can tell you are loving the new equipment!

yeah - here si some cropped down ones of my favouriote shot - just so you get a sense of the MP's :P

yeah it was cloudy out there but 24-70mm is not ideal for this stuff hard to get in close and yes mid morning light was already harsh - probably shouldve had polariser on and definitely some different settings on camera - thats ok all learning!

Maybe a question for you where should I be metering in a scenario like that... not that I was doing metering but might be somethign I should eb considering?

I still haven't worked out the best settings for bright days like that but I've found doing evaluative metering tended to give images that needed less light painting than others. The other idea is taking layered images with the exposure above and below by 2points so you can layer them and merge the images and paint the light better that way. Ive not tried that with action photos before.

Not sure it would be fast enough for MTB maybe for footo - would need to setup buttons and be bloody quick though

Or everything via tripod.

Incidentally apparently in Aus you don’t need consent to use photos of others... that said I think ethically I would prefer to have it!

That doesn't sound right. I know with many sporting events they state in the entry conditions that you may be photographed and entering the race is declaring your acceptance of the conditions that your image may be used somewhere. Mind you I don't recall seeing it for orienteering and I seem to be the OWA poster boy.

parkrun always states that if you don't want your photo taken (or used) to cross your arms when facing a photographer but that may just be out of courtesy than anything legal.

You could do image stacking. So multiple images of the background with different exposures to help remove the pools and shadows and too light highlights of light. Then a photo with the focus and exposure set for the subject (mtb) itself. Then merge images and paint the light to what you need using the image layers as required. Too hard. Just go on a cloudy day or early morning or magic hour.

And no everything I have read if you want to use that image or sell it you need to get an image release.

Only appear to be the case if you are planning to sell or commercially benefit - still pretty grey I would still err on side of caution

And yes image stack sounds like a pin and would have to be a set ahot

Image stacking can get some amazing photos. I want to try to do an image stack night landscape at some point. Would love to get a wide angle lens and a outex cover with a dome fitting for my camera but all these things just add up to $$$$$ and I don't earn anything from my photos.

brycec:
yeah I am still yet to try my wide angle - want to go do a night shot on it and try out the natural night filter I got.

How exactly does the image stacking work?
Aug 25, 2020 1:02 AM #
TrishTash:
I haven't done image stacking before but I have a setting for it on my camera and lightroom has some functions to do with stacking and layering photos for editing. Requires some youtube and google training!

But you can do image stacking with different focus points, different iso, different exposures and all sorts! So lots you can do with it. I've read that lots of people do the image stacking with astro-landscapes because they focus purely on getting the sky shots perfect and then only afterwards focus on the dark landscape and then merge the two images together.

Its an art I think.⁹

haha sounds like it!

Might do some reading/watching :P

all these things just add up to $$$$$

Perhaps you can sell these for a bit of cash.
