I guessed the family; and confirmed the particular type. Seems like they would rarely get to our neck of the woods but are more likely in your area. Did you see it close to home or on an excursion?

Discussion around my area's Audubon group is all about evening grosbeaks which some have sighted. We had periodically seen both them and rose breasted ones stopping at our feeder in NY, but without a lot of tall trees around we don't see much here (though I was thrilled at the pine siskins we had stop by over the past couple months).

At the Montague Sand Plains, a rather unique ecosystem in this area. Maybe 5 miles north of us. Red Crossbills uncommon but present most winters, but way early this year and in large numbers, similar to a lot of other birds (such as RB Nuthatches, Evening Grosbeaks, Siskins). A couple of the latter visited us yesterday.
