I was at Baldwin Hill (bhall's training course) at exactly the same time, and same thing there: The pond there (east edge of map, southeast of Oakmont HS; [edit] Whitmanville Reservoir) was 1) half open, which surprised me too after these several quite cold days and nights, and 2) going "boom!" and "crack!" and related loud scary noises the whole time I was on the east-facing slope.

They're not scary if you aren't on the ice. :-)

Maybe not scary to *you*, the cliff-jumper-offer and half-open-pond-skater!

Walking by half-open Lake McDonough yesterday we were treated to a symphony of booming, cracking and groaning ice. Pretty loud. I would not have cared to be out on it.

Also surprisingly loud is the sound of my spiked shoes as I walk out onto the ice to put on my skates.
