So I figure this is the best place to comment about the brevet.

I see P&G had a lovers tiff within the first 2hrs and have now split up. Pat is up the front, Georgia no doubt will be looking forward to the time when he blows and she can cruise past him.

90-100km in the first 5hrs of racing isn't too bad it will be interesting to see if the pace drops off.

did you guys pay attention to what looks like epic hike a bike over the dampier range and then up over cass saddle. bet there will be some interesting language

actually just looked further, fuck that carrying a bike on so many of those legs
Feb 15, 2021 3:54 AM #
Greig:
Yeah those first hike a bike sections look better than the bigger one later on.

Also looks like Pat is slowing up and has dropped off the front 3. Georgia is in a bunch and catching. Hopefully Pat parks up a bit or he risks being passed before the 2nd day is out.

yeah imagine being 2nd best in the house at a big race.
Greig, how is Pat going to be feeling???
Feb 15, 2021 7:57 AM #
Greig:
Well either Pat left behind his tracker or he's just been caught by the bunch behind. Unfortunately Georgia got dropped by this bunch a few hours back.

I'm going to give Pat the benefit of the doubt and assume he's planning to sleep in the shed and hasn't made a nav mistake. I guess the hike a bike at night time isn't too appealing as three others have joined him. Although carrying a bike at night shouldn't be much slower than during the day and it won't be as hot so you could argue that continuing makes more sense.

And it's possible Georgia will take the lead in half an hour and not even realise that she's passed Pat. It could lead to a little surprise later on if Pat gets a second wind and catches Georgia.

So I'm going to claim Georgia has enacted a pass on Pat although I'm not sure if the tracker just isn't updating or if she is sleeping under some gorse... actually I've just gone and checked again and she is now showing up in the same hut as Pat.

A bit disappointing, I would have found it more exciting if she'd snuck ahead without realising it. At under 200km for the day so far it looks like it's going to be a good few more days of racing. There won't be much biking up to Cass Saddle tomorrow, although after that there are a good number of flat fast km. I'd like to think they could get to Mesopotamia tomorrow but realistically they'll be lucky to get to Peel Forest I think and may only make it to Methven.

It seems that P&G have made up and the unfaithfulness of P or G has been forgiven. I presume they'll ride together for today and the unfaithful one will carry both bikes on all hike a bikes today to try and make amends.

I suspect Pat's chances of winning are now about nil, he tried at least.

Methven close to 200k away with a fair bit of hike a bike to do today. At least it should be a nice afternoon up and over Cass Saddle. Hamilton Hut will be tempting for a nap to then have good timing for shops open in Methven.
A chance for the unfaithful one to buy chocolates and flowers

The whinging pom has already ditched G, mustn't be able to handle carrying two bikes. G will need to make a more decisive pass next time instead of stopping for a quickie in a hut.

Hopefully Georgia can get my Buff that I left in the bush between the 541/542km marks, she should be there shortly.
Also - they are going really really slow, I did just over 760km today.
Feb 16, 2021 8:23 AM #
Greig:
I hope you told her where to look.

The pace does seem to have dropped off quite a bit. Pat is going to struggle to get to Methven by midnight. Georgia will be stopping before then.

Pity you headed home, you could have come out in the morning and been home before lunchtime.

Could have a I guess, stopped somewhere for the 10.30 daily meeting on zoom.

Georgia currently binging on Pies as predicted yesterday by me. I'm good at this dot watching game. Actually bit of an expert having no interest in taking part in said dotwatching events.

So Pat didn't sleep enough last night and needed a wee afternoon nap today which let Georgia catch up 50km. I presume she knows he's just in front of her and possibly he knows she is just behind. I guess they'll rendezvous at Royal hut tonight. Hopefully Georgia stamps her authority on the relationship and heads off first.

HidingControls:
They arrived at Royal together around midnight, Pats tracker then seemed to drift along and this morning Georgia's took a lead up the hill, suspect Pats tracker is a bit faulty at the moment.

O map???? about 16sqm forest and another 8 or so of other terrain

I see Pat couldn't help himself and has ridden away from Georgia again. Will he blow again and Georgia can finally get in front?

It would depend how dense the forest is.

Looks like it's going to be dinner by the lake with Georgia having caught Pat as he's now spent 3hrs in the lovely town of Tekapo. Me feels they're beginning to dawdle having covered 50km in 10hrs.

Looks like Pat gets lonely waits for Georgia, no idea what goes on in that conversation time but definitely looks like a Tiff though as he buggers off again.

Alternatively Georgia tells him to stop being a cry baby and get on with it.

Thanks for the support team! You had it about right.
