It's usually my best bet. I can get a rough figure using PurplePen and the line bend tool but it's not overly accurate and much harder to get around all the obstructions on a sprint map.

Otherwise I don't normally bother when I set sprints but then I've not set a sprint champs before.

Condes, allows to to draw two choices at a time to compare, although I have only used 1

We would do this in OCAD as use that for course planning (having a current version). But manually as a quick check - measuring wheel

jennycas:
You have a measuring wheel scaled at 1:4 000?

Craig:
In purple pen I usually use Add special Item - Line to draw a temporary measurement line and delete it when done. The length is shown under the control descriptions when the line is selected but not while you are still drawing it.

Measuring wheels can be rescaled by using basic maths skills.

So can pieces of string, and they don't slide around on the map as much as a wheel, and are better at going into corners of buildings :)

I love my measuring wheel. Cutest Christmas present in the past 10 years.

so you arrive at a Rogaine and get out your trusty wheel, check the "do all the course" options and it says 100+km and then you say to your partner lets go for it.

I love my wheel

Thank you LOST Richard. Am just about to pack for the first Rogaine of the year and hadn't put in my wheel. I usually don't look at the distance hoped for because it will just depress me. But I will take it.

...meaning none of you use string to measure distances at rogaines?

Must be an SA thing!

tRicky:
I use string on rogaines and it's quite common in WA, at least among the top competitors. Easier to recalculate than a stupid wheel. I use a wheel for ARs where there's no recalculation required.

As Ricky says - convert what the wheel can measure to the map scale (e.g. it has vagarious scales plus a cm scale). Also much quicker using the wheel to try various options for rogaines - no pins and string marked with km or whatever needed.

I use different coloured lines in OCAD to measure routes - usually symbol 707, which is purple. I create duplicates of this symbol and then change the colour, sometimes create new colours (eg red, dark blue). I can then draw the various routes and compare them using OCAD's toolbar measure. Then shortest routes are recorded and summed in a spreadsheet to give course lengths (for sprint, street-O).

This is somewhat laborious, but essential I think for a championship sprint event.

Uncle JiM:
Condes does all this automatically, you draw the route, this is recorded as the distance and shows up on the CD's

WA doesn't use Condes - we prefer the free stuff (OCAD9 and Purple Pen)!

Tash wants to use PurplePen for the MTBO she's setting in Vic but is being forced to use Condes by her controller. I don't know if she yet has it or not.

It will make her job of measuring the course so much easier
