I’ve noticed a fair number closing. Given how busy bike stores are and how many more people are outside over the last year, I thought they might have done better than the average small retail shops.

Cross-country ski shops have been busy too. It probably has something to do with selling expensive gear that is much easier to buy in person. I've heard concerns that people are buying accessories like bike parts and XC ski gloves online, making it less viable for local shops to carry such merchandise. Most things sold at running stores would fall into that category.

Our two running stores in town have been having record high amazingly good months throughout the pandemic! And Adventure Attic has never seen sales so great! Same with our two bike shops!! It is nice to see this sector of small businesses thrive through this, at least here locally.

Record sales also here in PS. Parry Sound Bikes sells nordic ski gear in winter so they have been selling out in both the cycling and ski season. I had to order Etoile’s e-bike back in November because their 2021 orders were already 2/3rds sold out.

Now we need this bump in outdoor gear sales and activity and lifestyle to create a wave of interest for more parks, more bike lanes, more trails etc.

Our local bike/ski shop is doing well too. I suspect some specialty businesses in our area rely on out-of-town customers and have always been borderline financially viable. Hamilton has a bigger population base to support downtown stores. It’s not just Running Free. I was going to buy shelving at the Solutions store in Newmarket last week but they’ve closed a bunch of stores. Our two favourite restaurants in Collingwood are gone too.

Agreed, Hammer, I hope the new pandemic outdoors lovers have become more interested in environmental and recreational issues.

As if the pandemic wasn't enough, now we have the Ever Given, plugging up the supply chain for all those running shoes and stylish spring outfits. What's a running store to do?
