Thanks for doing the controlling job on this map - a lot of work and driving. It used to be a good area and your adventures brings back memories from last century. I was putting out controls for Liz and could not find a tape so hung it on what I thought was the boulder cluster - Liz asked me to go back and double check - I could not find the flag again! but did find the tape and rehung another replacement control. Found the lost control when picking them up after the event - it was 200 to 300 metres away where it should have been.
I remember the 2003 Aust Rogaine Champs which Geoff Mercer set there, titled Naasty But Clear. In the middle of the night Alex Tyson & I were very close to where we thought our control should be, and were stopped by another team searching for it. While Alex was talking to them, I sidled behind a nearby clump of trees, found & punched the control and rejoined her, then when we had moved on, showed her the control card. This was in the days before Navlight and when all team members only had to go within 20m of the control!
It is a beautiful area, just a bit over-run with weeds at the
moment after the fires and significant rains. They are dying off with cooler weather and should be even be in a couple of weeks. I didn’t make my life easy by forgetting the master map and my compass on my first visit, and by having to visit control locations at the far reaches of every direction on my second visit. The weather down there has been glorious. Both times I left Canberra overcast and had perfect blue sky days at semi altitude.
Did Liz ever trust you again Bruce? Once I helped Eoin put out controls for Easter at Broken Hill. I really had no idea of what I was doing. One tape I just could not locate so randomly left the stand lying on the side of a hill... we did find it again eventually! Hopefully I’m somewhat better than that now, but Easter etc has rocked my confidence terribly.
This event is very tempting. If I'd noticed it was on a bit sooner I might well have been tempted. Last ran on Mount Clear in the early 2000s, I think (I recall it was the first time I'd had a remote finish so it must have been in the early days of SI). Hopefully it doesn't overgrow as quickly as most of the post-2003-fire Namadgi areas did.
In the time I was more closely connected to Canberra than now, the biggest barrier to using Mount Clear was parking; how have you solved that problem?
Permissions were quite a while coming. Not sure how long they've been working on it, but I think since last year. Then there was the bridge washed away... All good now though. Parking is allowed inside the gate (horse paddocks). The drive down is pretty rough, all the surface gravel has washed off the road and all that is left is hard clay with many water channels. To compensate for all that, the terrain is awesome!
