Sarasota County in the heart of the Suncoast area of Florida is celebrating its Centennial.
As part of the celebration the Parks and Recreation Department has put together a list of 100 things to do in their many various parks, preserves, waterways and wilderness areas.
Just in case you were worried Orienteering would not make the list there we are, #58.
Since 2013 Suncoast Orienteering (SOAR) has been holding orienteering events in various Sarasota County locations. It has been a great experience working with their park employees.
Congratulations Sarasota County on your first 100 years.

Actually the county just north of Sarasota is Manatee. They can go Sarasota one better. Their Parks and Rec Department (with only a very little help from me) has set up permanent orienteering courses in one of their parks. The courses are based on the iOrienteering timing. They have also purchased an SI timing system for use with special orienteering camps and when orienteering will be part of their school break camps. They are 'beta testing' it this summer and Suncoast Orienteering will work with them to have a JROTC and public event in December where they will also publicize their permanent courses and the availability of their SI system for special events. Want to have an office picnic at the park? Include orienteering.

Are you interested in building a partnership with your local Parks and Rec Department? Try putting together a presentation like this one I have used it a couple of times and I think it pushes the right buttons.
