Worth a 100km side trip from Tennant Creek when I'm passing through in a few weeks?

Maybe, but I am sure you have seen better granite terrain that is not on the tourist list. Well worth the stop if you are passing on the highway but not sure about the 100km each way side trip. (I put a few pics on Facebook but there are plenty of images online)

It is quite extensive and a few kms of trails

BTW Tennant Creek is getting a very bad wrap for crime so not sure it is the best place to hang around. We were planning to go to Kathrine and Nitmiluk NP but the they have not cleared the crocs out of the gorge yet so no kayaking or swimming for at least another couple of weeks

Pretty much any outback town with a significant Aboriginal population gets that sort of reputation, sometimes deserved, often not. Hadn't planned to do anything other than overnight there.

After taking every single thing from your car inside the motel, of course.

Advice from Geoff (admittedly he passed through there 10+ years ago) is that the town had the sort of vibe which made him want to "get the f*** out of there".

Yes it seems the reputation of Tennant Creek is unfortunately well deserved at present, not sure why it is worse than other places but too many bad stories says it is not a great place to stay
