| walk: | Come on! Get a real heart rate. You're dogging it. |

| PG: | He's a philosopher. They aren't allowed to get high heart rates. Have to appear mellow at all times. |

| PBricker: | George: You're HR would jump over 156 if I said "boo!"
I was breathing really hard by the end of these, so I wasn't dogging it (and didn't look very mellow). My resting HR (A.M., before the pot of coffee) is under 40; so maybe the differential, 156 - 38 =118 is what matters. |

| walk: | Yeah - I'm not sure what it is with mine. It has always been high. I remember an exercise in physics class in HS estimating with our eyes closed an interval of two minutes pretty exact by counting my pulse at 80 per min. (We were supposed to do it mentally to show how difficult it is to know time increments - so I got bad points for "cheating".)
My resting is about 55 and peaked today at 178 = delta of 123. Not much difference. |

| levitin: | Phil, what's your estimated maximum HR ? The highest I've ever seen on my HRM was an uphill finish at the Billygoat (Fox Forest?) of 183, so I use 185 as a max HR.
From what I've read, it's the (peak HR - resting HR) / (estimated max HR - resting HR) that's the indicator of whether you're in the right range. |

| PBricker: | I suppose my maximum HR could be anywhere between 160 and 165, though I've never recorded it above 163 since I started using HR monitors about 5 years ago, and haven't even seen 160 in a couple years. I don't tend to go all out at the end of races, though (and don't usually wear an HR monitor for races, just for training).
One formula I saw is that VO2 maximum heartrate is 95% of maximum heartrate: since I don't think the 156 I had at the end of the last mile interval was beyond VO2 max (I was breathing at my limit, but not anaerobic), that suggests my maximum HR is at least 165. So my "reserve heartrate" as its called, max HR - resting HR, would be about 125. |
