Ugh. I'm not looking forward to seeing what changes he makes. It would be a shame to have to leave and lose the good things on Twitter.

yeah i agree. it is a such a great platform for promoting early career researchers and students in the lab. for example, this article only happened because of some promo tweets

Five academics I follow have announced they are leaving Twitter today

:( I guess the interesting question is which platform will become the new online meeting place for academics and physicians. I hope civilians will be able to follow the discussions as well.

I suspect there is an opportunity here for people to create a new not for profit sci comm platform though I've seen some people talking about going back to list serv. Yuck.

Apparently Mastadon is having a lot of former twitter followers moving their way but it looks clunky.

I deleted my LInkedIn account a few days ago though it takes several weeks to go into effect (not sure why). It is an important platform for people getting into work force but I find it a PITA.

I've always thought academics were some of the best on Twitter as a means to speak directly to the public, no department captured it better than Economics profs (esp energy/climate ones).

For Musk and twitter, I'll continue to quote William Goldman: nobody knows anything.

Derek Thompson of the Atlantic and Ringer had a good piece in the spring on Musk (some of this is dated):
https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/04/...
Thompson predicts Musk will fail with Twitter. Musk is great with cars and rockets, but with Twitter, the product is people and people are impossible.

But, after next Wed, this isn't my file! (changing jobs)

Musk and Twitter have something to do with your job, Nev?

Nev-Monster:
My job the last 5 years has been VP Policy for Canada's tech industry association. Twitter is a member (fairly quiet) but who owns them doesn't really matter.
But, changing jobs in Nov!

Nev, I really think it does matter who owns Twitter. The hate groups have already ramped up their language to see if the new owner would respond. ie to see what they could get away with.

Here is an interesting take for staying on twitter (for now).

Ah, I wouldn't have thought of Twitter being a member but that makes sense. What's the new job? Anvil dropped a big hint.

P.S. Agreed, Hammer.
