The bird you showed me a photo of that you weren't sure about is probably the same kind as one I saw on Santa Cruz Island last week, and one that someone posted about on my Audubon page today...a ruby crowned kinglet? Mine also has the eye ring that's more noticeable fore and aft of the eye,

and so does this one, which was ID'd as a ruby crowned kinglet.

I figured out not longer after we chatted that it was a kinglet. I had never noticed the "unbalanced" eye ring.

Always something new to learn.

Here's the Coot I saw at the Red Rock Canyon ranger station. Last place I would have expected to see one.

On our epic drive to Alaska in 1994, Charlie was IDing a bunch of birds for the rest of us. I remember spotting a kinglet at a hot springs stop in northern BC, but I can't remember if it was a ruby-crowned or a golden-crowned.
