Read your manual. You can get in with the metal key using the hidden keyhole and you can start the car by holding the fob next to the steering column.

Yeah, I tried the steering column in various places even after warming up the key a bit. Weird thing is the remote lock/unlock was still working.

Ok, I just tried again after taking the key battery out and got it to work. Seems like I have to hold the tip of the fob into the start button.....just like it shows in the manual ;)

Those fobs burn thru batteries once a year. I keep an extra in the glove box.

But the VW is about to turn into a Volvo.
