Bomb: I see the forecast is for some hot days in Vic this weekend (especially compared to chilly Queensland!). What's the chance of a fire ban forcing the event to get cancelled? or is it going to be all good?

blairtrewin: It looks like the Sunday event will go ahead regardless but with earlier starts - more details soon. Very little chance of a fire ban on Saturday (no wind), Sunday probably a 30% risk.

Tooms: Deja vu from a few years back when we flew over for Eureka and ended up with one run one day and an "informal" run the other. Fingers crossed for you all!

phatmax: Start times have been brought forward by an hour, and the badge event will start in parallel. Cancellation, or not, in case of a fire ban is a policy decision for the VOA. Arguements for and against. I think the current policy of not running on fireban days has served us well for a number of reasons. Compromise would be to run the NOL, but postpone the badge event till later in the year. Fngers crossed that the decision doesn't have to be made.

lazydave: Was the policy initially made after a request from Parks?

Jerritt: Can I ask why you wouldn't run on fireban days?

Shep: australians just insist on having a post-race durry, as we all know they are a fire hazard so the only solution is to not let people run.

gordhun: a post-race durry
What's that???

#  Posted 2008-03-07 04:37:52
Tooms: nah, I think Shep runs around the forest so fast that the heat potentially generated by his passing can ignite the tinder-dry eucalypt and cause a firestorm. The authorities would rather not have to extract poor punters from remote areas when he's dashed through.

markg: durry = cigarette

Wyatt: I suspect it's just easier for the Park Rangers to just tell everyone to stay home than ask or trust that people won't start a fire. I forget which, but some part of the Western US was affected like this at one point. "Do not enter." "Why?" "Because you might start a fire." "I'm on foot, going for a run..." "Uh. Well, the lieutenant said no one can enter, cuz you might start a fire" "How am I gonna start a fire? With my watch?" "Uh..." "Can I run here then?" "No." I think they like the power trip...

blairtrewin: Looks like we're probably in the clear - the wind forecast for Sunday has been downgraded a bit and the light rain yesterday helped a bit too.
