I have long been on the fence about rogaining in general and the WRC in particular. I waffled but ultimately did sign up for WRC 3.5 years ago when submitting my entry for the soon-to-be-canceled 2020 edition of NAOC/WRC. I hesitated again last year (when it was downshifted to US champs because Canadians and others still couldn't easily cross borders)--I had a partner I had never met before but we were well matched, we got along fine and covered ground well for the first ten hours or so, then we both fell apart and decided to throw in the towel less than halfway through the 24 hours.

I vacillated once again this year, when reconsidering my carried-over-from-2020 Cal O-Fest entries, asking myself, do I really want to do this? What has turned me around from dreading to eagerly anticipating is finding an excellent partner--we're not well matched physically but we each know exactly what we are getting from the other and are able to set expectations accordingly. I'm talking about my son Kyle, the eldest of my three kids (soon turning 38), who has deigned to accompany me at my snail's pace.

Opportunities to do stuff like this with my children get rarer and rarer as I get older and less capable, and their calendars get more and more booked with all the stuff going on in their lives. We're certainly not trailblazing by being a parent/child team, I can think of several such teams off the top of my head and I'm sure there are others I am not aware of. We'll definitely be reading the results from the bottom up in the Open category!

Good for you... I am most likely going to stick to camera duty at this year's event. But hope to make use of GPS tracking and the bisecting access road to establish when/where teams will be crossing it and intercepting them on course.

I am still registered for WRC though.
