TL:DR — Military fighting the paramilitary. There was a coup a few years ago and the coup-ers were going to yield to a democratically elected government.
Sad stuff. They don’t need another civil war. :-(

I read a bit in the NY Times that's quite similar to the BBC story (and to Peggy's TL;DR). It seems like a real mess. It seems like it escalated really quickly. I also read something about all all of the diplomats leaving. That seems bad. Well, I guess it is good for those people (including my former classmate) getting out. But it doesn't bode well for the Sudanese people.

Sounds like most of the fighting is actually happening in Khartoum, which is unusual for an African civil war.

There is plenty of fighting outside of Khartoum, but, yeah, the city is getting perhaps the worst of it. Agree that it's unusual.
