At the nav race out in Sun Lakes this past weekend, about 15 minutes after the race had started and everyone was gone, a group of 5 people were walking by and stopped by our tent, which read "Northwest Trail Runs" (the sister series of Northwest Nav Races). It was an older couple with two of their young-ish adult children, and one of the children's partners.

This is literally the best time for o-vangelism because it's right after the start of the race, because a) there's no longer any busy pre-race stuff to do (registration, map handout, intention sheet collection, punchcard handout, pre-race briefings, countdowns, answering last minute questions, etc), and b) you're still feeling that race day buzz.

They all seemed really interested in what was going on; how this particular race works, how often we have races, where we have races, etc. I showed them maps and such, obviously. I ask them where they are from, and I'm definitely expecting Seattle as an answer because the parents seemed very Seattle to me. And I was right, they were. But the younger couple lives in, as you've probably guessed by now, Missoula.

And the guy also said that he makes maps (GIS field). His head basically exploded when as I told him about an activity that uses maps for fun and that there was a group in Missoula that did this.

Anyway, I'm fully expecting this guy to come out to one of your events sometime.

I don't know. These were just vacationers at the park that stopped to talk.

Maybe the couple who run Cairn Cartographics?

I reached out to them back when I was planning a trip to Glacier.

That *could* be them. It's hard to tell because of the hats, sunglasses, shade, and beard, but the hair color of the guy is a match (he was clean shaven when I met him).

Also, the guy mentioned that he was a "cartographer" and when I followed up a little, it sounded like he was more of a freelance sort of guy than someone who does GIS for a company or whatever.

We strictly talked nuts and bolts of the nav race, and then how orienteering events differed a little bit. Since it was an extended family outing for them, I didn't want to take too much of their time.

I had also reached out to Cairn when we first started in Missoula, but didn't hear anything back that time.

After a bit of googling, I found this article with some more photos of of Jamie (of Cairn). I'm pretty sure that it's not the same guy. The guy I met seemed a lot younger.
