Now that would have been nice.

It was...

Mind you, that hill slope across the valley took over three hours of mapping.

Nice country. Looking forward to visiting it.

I haven't talked to Jim about it yet, but its well suited to a Bendigo Today now that I have found some reasonable access to the granite, and there is a nearby gold mining area suitable for a sprint.

Looking at the photo, I'd say you did well to map it in 3 hours!

"over three hours"

Eleventy hours.

Whela is tentatively in my calendar although I have no idea of my commitments for that date in October and may be happy to wait until the BendiGo To-Day.
(Which, if in its usual timeslot, may potentially clash with NOL races in Tasmania...)

Jim has an interest in NOL races so might not like to clash his events with any. I definitely know my commitments for 14-15 October (ACT MTBO Champs).

Have 2024 NOL dates and venues been announced yet? The OA page just says submissions need to be lodged by 28 February (i.e. three months ago).

Hopefully NOL is also taking into account what is on offer in NZ

Yes the reason I cancelled my Darwin escape for the upcoming season is for those two lots of events so nothing in Aus is going to draw my interest away from them!

So IOF hasn't announced yet which of those NZ sprint weekends will be Oceania Regional Championships?

The Oceania Champs will surely be Aust team trials for Sprint WOC, which is why I'm surprised that they are not part of 2024 NOL schedule (which was apparently circulated at the OA AGM and somebody had told me it was buried in the NOL pages under Get Involved on the OA website, but I can't find it there now so maybe the schedule is under revision).

My understanding is that the Oceania Championships events will be split across the two weekends (have forgotten which ones are where).

Incidentally, there has been a lot of orienteering map fantasising happening during my travels (in some cases dependent on a fire happening first). On top of the plateau at Katherine Gorge features prominently, but more obscurely, Forsayth (Queensland) looks to have excellent granite terrain in several directions.

Sadly both of those places are Central to Nowhere so unlikely to get a look in.

All this NOL, NZ and Oceania sprint discussion. I will remain focused on forest. The important points are - Whela Hill is unlikely to go ahead in October as a fixtured event. The event was fixtured as a Training Event which means it probably wasn't in the permit application, so I can't have entry fees, or more than 29 people. A new terrain of this quality will attract too many. Thus the suggestion of Bendigo ToDay. From this you can deduce it is not on the list for Easter 2025, which says a little about the maps that are on the list.

Oh. I couldn’t go to that event, sadly.

Apologies Neil, for sullying your log with mention of impure race formats :)

Impure gives a tone of religous zealotry with which I feel uncomfortable. The word "ersatz" has the appropriate tone. But I wonder then how I would describe MTBO. My vocabulary is found to be insufficient for the circumstances.
