catherineols: My only awareness of the West Tiger Railroad Grade consists of some bad memories of a failed hiking excursion with my mother in which we intended to take a loop, but instead took a wrong turn. Needless to say we started getting suspicious that the trail wasn't turning back, but by that point we had already gone through several swaths of stinging nettles and other prickly overgrowth...

Sounds like you had a very fun adventure! I'm jealous that you're able to keep it up for that long =P

ebone: You and your mom did some bushwhacking, too--cool! ;-) Yes, it was fun. There are actually a lot of places on Tiger Mtn. where it's not too thick to go cross country, and it's even runnable in places (e.g. the areas of dense second-growth canopy on the East part of the area).

This trek benefited from the time of year. As spring comes, so will the nettles, and the other understory plants will leaf out and grow new shoots, and some areas that don't seem too bad now will become pretty inhospitable.
